Having a shampoo basin suitable for people with disabilities is important for accommodating people with reduced mobility (PRM) in your salon.
Mysalondecoiffure presents several models of shampoo basins specially designed for this purpose and offers some advice on making your hairdressing salon accessible to everyone…
A practical and easy-to-use PWD shampoo basin
Mysalondecoiffure offers hairdressing professionals two PRM shampoo basins to accommodate wheelchair users: the PODIUM and the IBIS.
The PODIUM consists of a polyester column topped with a tilting ceramic basin. It is adjustable, allowing the hairdresser to adapt the height to suit the client for greater comfort.
This means the client can position themselves directly at the basin without leaving their wheelchair. Indeed, it is often difficult to position a person with a leg disability at a standard hairdressing unit: they may not always be able to stand up using crutches or pull themselves out of their wheelchair, and it is not always possible to lift them.
With PODIUM, you avoid this problem and ensure optimal comfort for both your clients and your team of professionals. This model is available in three versions with columns in different colours: black, white or grey.
IBIS follows the same design philosophy, with the difference that it is a unit mounted on castors. Economical and practical, its compact dimensions allow you to store it easily when not in use. It has the great advantage of being able to be moved right up to the client.
How can you ensure a warm welcome for people with disabilities?
From a legal perspective, a hairdressing salon falls into the category of public access premises (ERP). As such, you are obliged to ensure your premises are accessible to everyone, including people with reduced mobility. The only exception is where there is a proven technical impossibility due to a major problem.
In practical terms, this means that people in wheelchairs must be able to access:
- the car park (if you have a private car park)
- the entrance to the hairdressing salon
- to the toilets, if they are open to the public
As for the entrance, an access ramp (retractable or otherwise) can usually be easily installed. You will also need to ensure the entrance is wide enough.
Furthermore, your reception desk should be fitted with a wheelchair-accessible counter of suitable dimensions, fixed at the correct height to allow your wheelchair-using customers to put down their bags or sign a cheque.
However, beyond these legal requirements, other factors must be taken into account to ensure people with disabilities are welcomed in the best possible conditions: movement within the premises and, as we have seen, access to the hand-washing basin.
Unfortunately, these provisions are far from being standard practice, which makes it much more difficult to cater for this clientele. If you are about to open your business, do make sure to allow for a passageway of sufficient width between each area to enable a person in a wheelchair to move around without hindrance.
And don’t forget that the IBIS model is available for under €500!
Mysalondecoiffure is a Mobicoiff brand and, as such, offers a complementary bespoke fit-out service. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any enquiries. We’d be delighted to advise you and provide further details to help you cater for all members of the public!
