A hairdressing salon isn’t just a place where people get their hair cut. It’s more than that. Your customers also come to enjoy a moment of relaxation. They’re looked after in a space that’s almost exclusively theirs. Whether you’re opening a new salon or refurbishing an existing one, it’s vital to design the décor in line with current trends or the style you want to create. Your décor should make potential customers want to come in, and then come back again. That’s why the layout and décor of your hair salon are so important. Here are the three key steps to designing your hair salon effectively.

Successful decoration and layout of your hair salon
Step 1: Define the customer journey
Repainting and freshening up the décor is all well and good, but it’s easy to overlook the need to rethink the ‘layout’ of the space. You therefore need to consider the customer journey. The shopfront is the first point of contact with a potential customer. A good shopfront should invite people to come in. It must also reflect the atmosphere you wish to create in your salon, so that once inside, the prospective customer’s initial impression is reinforced. The ‘reception’ area must be genuinely welcoming and, of course, positioned at the entrance to the salon. You will then invite the customer to proceed to the shampoo area, ideally in a discreet corner of your salon. The retail area must be easily accessible to customers so that they can try out, touch and smell the products. When designing your salon layout, make sure to include display tables.
Step 2: Create an atmosphere unique to your hair salon
You need to define a memorable feature for your salon, especially if you’re operating in a highly competitive area – setting yourself apart is all part of marketing. Your décor theme can, of course, draw inspiration from existing trends – vintage, for example, is very much in vogue. But don’t forget that each area of the salon can have its own distinctive features. The ‘shampoo’ area, for instance, should focus on relaxation and privacy, so don’t hesitate to use soft pastel colours there. The shop window must be enticing and eye-catching: a digital display, for example, generates 33 per cent more footfall into the salon.
Step 3: embrace digital technology to bring a modern feel to your hairdressing salon
Storage units and shelves are very much in vogue. Paradoxically, many hairdressing salons still haven’t introduced a digital element. Don’t hesitate to provide kiosks where customers can pre-order retail products. Your customers may also sometimes need to send emails or messages from their smartphones or tablets. So, when planning your wiring, consider incorporating multi-socket power strips into your furniture. When designing your shop window display, include a touch of digital – it looks modern and customers appreciate it.
A salon is never really finished. Test things out, rearrange the layout and reinvest in new furniture from time to time to refresh the décor and keep surprising your customers!
