When you’re planning to renovate or fit out your barber shop, there are several factors to consider: the size and layout of the premises, the type of clientele you wish to attract, your budget… and your personal taste!

As professionals specialising in the fit-out of hairdressing salons and barber shops, we’d like to offer some basic advice to help ensure your set-up is a success.

Step one: defining the areas of your barber shop

Whether you’re fitting out a barber shop or creating a barber’s area within a hairdressing salon, the first consideration is the space available. Try to visualise the different areas of your salon, the flow of movement between them, and the view your customers will have when they enter your premises.

Whatever layout you choose, prioritise practicality above all else: both you and your customers must be able to move around the salon easily, and there must be enough space for you to work comfortably. Opt for an open-plan layout, otherwise you risk creating a stifling atmosphere, which is hardly conducive to the relaxation your customers come to you for…

Fitting out a small barber shop or barber’s corner

If you’re short on space, opt for a compact styling station that you can position against a wall. Not far from this, place the barber’s chair in a prominent position: this is the centrepiece of your salon. Leave some open space to create a sense of spaciousness.

When it comes to décor, opt for light colours, which make the room appear larger. For the same reason, make the most of mirrors! Pay particular attention to the lighting, especially at the back of your salon. Finally, don’t clutter your premises with pictures and other knick-knacks: small spaces don’t lend themselves to this.

Designing a large barber’s salon

Are you lucky enough to have premises of a comfortable size? Make the most of this by paying careful attention to the layout of the space. Create clearly defined areas, separated by spaces dedicated to movement. When it comes to style, whilst vintage is a timeless classic, the industrial look is currently very popular and lends itself well to the atmosphere of a barber shop.

You could include a comfortable waiting area, with a sofa, pouffes and a coffee table. Opt for a reception counter that’s large enough to display the products you’re selling.

You also have a choice when it comes to colours and décor, but keep it understated, unless your salon is located in a particularly ‘fashionable’ city neighbourhood – and even then! A few carefully chosen photos or objects, some well-placed lighting, and you’re all set.
